Syros Island 2005
Trip to Syros Island Greece summer 2004
To Syros we get just for one day on the way back to Athens and it was really wonderful.
We arrived to Syros Island at night and we found hotel right in the port called
Diogenis hotel
nice accommodation with own bathroom.
We walked through the city and had dinner in great Italian restaurant. It was the best food I had ate in Greece!
The next day we went by car to beach about half hour drive. It was very hot and we enjoyed the sea.
The water is in Syros clear and as we like diving we felt like in paradise.
At the evening we returned back to the port of Syros and went again to the italian restaurant where we talked to the owner and cheff in one.
The next morning we hop in the boat to Pireus and get to Athens. The ferry from Piraeus to Syros going very often

About the SYROS ISLAND
Siros, or Syros is a Greek island in the Cyclades, in the Aegean Sea about 4 hours from Athens by normal ferry - the speed one can make it 3 hours.
The island features towns including Ermoupoli and Ano Syros. Ermoupolis (as well as the island itself) is considered the "capital" of the Cyclades,
and always had been a significant port town, during the past century more significant than Pireus.
History of Syros:
At the time of the Greek war of independence (circa 1820-22) due to various outrages there were thousands of Greek refugees from various islands
who fled to Syros (Syra) for safety.
Many of these refugees settled permanently, bringing their various skills with them.
As a result Syros Island almost overnight changed from a rather quiet island into a vigorous centre of crafts, industry and production.
Also, due to its large excellent port at Ermoupoli (Hermopolis) it became a major centre for ship building and refitting.
To this very day (2005) it remains a place where many ships are serviced and refitted.
Pherecydes of Syros was a Greek thinker from the island of Siros, Magna Graecia of the 6th century BC.
Pherecydes authored the Heptamychia, one of the first attested prose works in Greek literature, which formed an important bridge between mythic
and pre-Socratic thought. In this piece, Pherecydes taught his philosophy through the medium of mythic representations.
Although it is lost, the fragments that survive are enough to reconstruct a basic outline.
Aristotle in Metaphysics (section 1091 b 8) thus characterized Pherecydes' work as a mixture of myth and philosophy.
