Syntagma Square Athens
Syntagma Square - also know as Constitution Square, is situated in main city centre of Athens, the capital of Greece.
On the top of The Syntagma Square is Greek Parliament
The Syntagma Square was named after the Constitution which King Otto (German King) was forced to grant the people after
a military uprising began on September 3rd, in the year 1843.
KING OTTO
Otto of Wittelsbach, Prince of Bavaria and King of Greece (born in Salzburg, June 1st, in year 1815 - died in Bamberg, July 26th, in year 1867)
was made the first modern
king of Greece in 1832 under the Convention of London, whereby Greece
became a new independent kingdom under the protection of the United Kingdom, France and Russia
The Syntagma Square is bordered by Georgiou Ave Street to the north, Othonos Street to the south,
Filellinon Street to the west and Amalias Avenue to the east. The eastern side of the square is higher than the western and is dominated
by a set of marble steps along the metro station (Syntagma) that lead to Amalias Avenue. Under these steps lies the Syntagma metro station connecting the square with the rest of Athens.
There is direct line to the Athens airport from Syntagma. The stairs come down
between a pair of outdoor cafes, and are a popular gathering place in the city center. The square has two grassy areas to the north and south,
planted with shade trees. In the center of the square there is a large water fountain which hosts the occasional Syntagma pigeons
along with the occasional heat-tormented Athenian.
Syntagma Square is also the frequent site of political demonstrations. Also near to Syntagma Square are several ministry
and when are demonstration holds infornt of them usually its finish in Syntagma Square.
The Greek Parliament is just across Amalias Avenue to the East,
and is surrounded by the extensive National Gardens, which are open to the public.
Changing of the Guard
Evzones in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Every hour, the Changing of the Guard ceremony, performed
by Greek army troops wearing the traditional Evzones uniform is conducted in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on the area between the Square and Parliament.
Syntagma Square is a hub for many forms of public transportation in Athens; the metro and tram both stop here, and buses
or trolley-buses are available to any point in the city.
Travel between Syntagma Square and the Eleftherios Venizelos Airport is available via special airport bus and metro lines.
One of the main dominant on Syntagma Square is the building of Hotel Grande Bretagne.
The Grande Bretagne Hotel is not simply a luxury hotel in Athens (surely the most luxurious establishment in Greece)
Over the 126 years of the hotel' s existence one also observes the changes on Syntagma Square.
Approximately 82 million euros were invested to create a state-of-the-art, five-star hotel worthy of that title.
Reconstructed from top to bottom, it features 290 rooms and 31 suites, all of them newly refurbished,
and redecorated in keeping with the old Grande Bretagnes traditional style.
As the history of the Grande Bretagne unfolds, so does the transformation of the city of Athens,
as well as the political history of Greece, with which the hotel is indissolubly associated.
There is no political or historical event in modern Greek history with which the Grande Bretagne is not somehow linked, by one means or another.
Syntagma Square is also Shopping Cnetre of Athens.
Besides there is lots of shops around the square - there is one leading shopping street -
ERMOU STREET
Ermou connecting the new modern Syntagma with old historical Plaka and Monastiraki.
The Ermou street could easy remind Oxford street in London.
It is also the first place you will normally be recommended to shop in, the pedestrian Ermou street.
Opening hours are:
8:30-13:30 and 17:30-20:30 Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. Monday and Wednesday 8:30-14:00. Saturday 8:30-14:30,
Sundays closed. Also particulary department stores are open everyday from 8:30 to 20:30.
In Ermou street are for example shops: Bertulucci, Esprit, Zara, Extreme, Benetton, Online, Focas, Glouy, Folie Folie, Sephora, Marks and Spencer, Replay,
Nike, and many other shops.
Almost every day you can see in Ermou old man playing on street piano (barrel-organ) walking from the top down or from down to top of the street.
In the half of the Ermou street is the small and wonderfully preserved Byzantine church of Kapnikareas stands,
in its own tiny square. This is one of the best preserved Byzantine structures in the capital and dates from the 11th century.
The Syntagma Square is also located near many of Athens' oldest and most famous neighborhoods and tourist attractions.
The neighborhoods of Plaka, Monastiraki, Psirri and Kolonaki are all within walking distance,
and most of the famous sites of ancient Athens are nearby, including the Acropolis, the Theater of Dionysus,
the Areopagus, the Ancient Agora of Athens with Hadrian's Library, the Tower of the Winds in the Roman Agora,
the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates, the Arch of Hadrian, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Pnyx, the Philopappos Monument on the Hill of the Nymphs,
the Kerameikos Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Lycabettus Hill. Historic churches also dot the area, some dating from the Middle Ages.
