Naxos Island 2005
Naxos Island
we spent in Naxos Island very nice time during the summer 2005. It was in August and the wether is really hot !
Naxos is about 5 hours by ferry from the post Pireus in Athens. The ticket cost around 36 EUR per persons and it is highly recommended to book the tickets in advance. If you prefer to di thing for the last minute be aware. All tickets are sold out and you will have no chance to buy it on the same day.
We travelled on big Blue Star ferry for 1600 passangers. And there was no seat available.
The port in Naxos called Hora is small and the town is just 200 meters from the port. There are many caffes around and people who is returning back to Athens or continue in their trips farther to Islands filling those places the spend some time before their boat arrived.
If you like to saty in the town the best seems to be to find hotel in the "Old Town" in narow streets on the hill up to the Castle. It all looks very romantic. There are many many shops with variety goods, t-shorts, heads, jewellery,
cloths, souveniers and more.
Almost up just uder the Castle are few restaurants with great view. There is also Archaeological Museum.
Naxos Archaeological Museum is housed in the old School of Commerce building where Catholic monks gave instruction and for a time the great Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis was a student. The building dates from the period of Frankish rule
We stayed in guest house near the main centre aprox 10 min walk. It was pleasant acoommodation in apartments
we paid 100 EUR per apartment for 4 persons (2 bed rooms) and there was also swiming pool in the garden. To the nearest beach it was about 1 Km but the beach is nothing special. We better go little farther to atnother one.
We have been in Naxos one week without car and have not travelled much around the Island.
To have a car is advantage anyway. It is easy to renta car or byke as tehre is many rent acr points. You need just driving licence and money.
How to get to Naxos Island
Ferries from Pireaus port in Athens to Naxos are frequent.
The ferry takes about 6 hours and the high-speed boat takes half that time (3 hours) but the high speed boat costs 2 times more.
ABOUT NAXOS
Naxos has many very beautiful beaches, such as those at Agia Anna, Agios Prokopios, Alikos, Castraki, Mikri Vigla, Plaka, and Agios Georgios at Hora, the capital of the island, which has 7,000 inhabitants.
Naxos is famous as the most fertile island of the Cyclades. It has a good supply of water in a region where water is usually inadequate. Mount Zas (1,004 metres) is the highest peak in the Cyclades, and tends to trap the clouds, permitting greater rainfall.
