When was the restaurant "The Good Solder Svejk" opened in 1982 ethnic cuisines just beginning to appear in Greece except for some Italian and French restaurants.
One of the 4 co-owners, Mr. Spyros Koulouris, who grew up in former Czechoslovakia and adopted the culture of this country, created a place in the heart of Athens which aesthetically evokes a corner of Prague.
Today after 22 years in business the clientele which consists of people of all ages continues to grow.
In Neos Kosmos, an area which is constantly being upgraded, a few metres away from the metro station and tram stop, we find a beautiful restaurant which brings to mind the old aristocratic world of Czechoslovakia.
The dark colours we encounter upon entering evoke the luxurious pubs of Prague. And therefor you will find really different kind of restaurant in Athens.
The environment is pleasant, warm, friendly and filled with the air of the humoristic writings of Yuroslav Hachek, from which the restaurant borrowed its name. Illustrations from this book made by Czech artist Josef Lada decorate the walls while paintings and wall-paintings by Greek artist Panagiotis Beltekos views from Prague complete the setting.
The decor is simple and the furniture is classical. There are 3 levels, the ground floor with a few tables, the first floor which consists of the main dining area and a semi-outdoor area for the summer months whose unique style is inspired by the train stations of Central Europe.
There is a large gamut of tasty selections, which " The Good Solder Svejk" offers. Though the Czech cuisine figures prominently, Slovakian recipes complete the bill of fare as well as the creations of Chef Tanya Koulouri who pursuing her passion for cooking traveled to many European countries and meticulously studied the greater part of their gastronomic literature.
Mrs Koulouri offers original flavors with a home-made style and character.
She uses fresh ingredients exclusively which she herself cooks.
She does not just supervise the kitchen area since she believes that the most important part of a good restaurant is its heart, in other words, the kitchen.
The nain drink "The Good Solder Svejk" recommends is beer.
The two most popular Czech beers are available on drought.The wine list should not be lightly dismissed. There is a wide selection of good wines. There are even some Hungarian wines which can substitute for the quite good but difficult to come by Slovakian ones. Not to be missed are some choice wines by the glass.

I went out yesterday to a Czech restaurant in Neos Kosmos. Outside, you think you are entering some sort of warehouse. On the inside it looks a bit like a British pub, with wooden panelling and dim lighting. However, the comparison ends there. O Kalos Stratiotis Svejk (Good Soldier Svejk) turned out to be a superb restaurant, with excellent food, a range of choices on the menu and a nice selection of wines.
We tried a traditional salad and main course - fantastic! A king couldn't have eaten better. The portions were enormous - so much so that I couldn't finish the main course, unusually for me. The meat was tender and perfectly cooked. Plus, there were these unusual pieces of a kind of thick, almost suety bread to dip in the sauce. Very filling. One thing I noticed was that a lot of the salads seemed to contain nuts - maybe that's a feature of Czech life? Perhaps there are lots of nut trees there.
It makes a nice change from all the typical Greek tavernas around here. Nice though they are, it's good to have a bit of variety, and Svejk was just the ticket!

It was surprice when i found that there is Czech restaurant in Athens. After many days eating meals on the gril i was so keen to go there.
It is located in Neos Kosmos and we took taxi to get there coz we were not sure if we can find it by metro or bus. The taxi cost us 3 eur from Syntagma square.
Once we get there it was around 9 pm and the restaurant was not so full. We choose place in the garden instead of inside as it was in the summer.
We enjoyed Great Czech beer (Budvar) Czech national meal "Svickova" and salads. The staff was very kind and helpful. And Mr. Spyros Koulouris Czech speaking manager of the restaurant talk to with us all the time
