Districts

PIRAEUS
(Piraeus) located south of Athens - modern port remainds as a major shipping and industrial centre. The port serves ferry routes to almost every island in the eastern portion of Greece. The best way to get to the Pireus port is by metro. Line 1 (green) ending there.

Piraeus Piraeus was known in medieval times as Porto Leone, a name due to the enormous stone lion, which guarded the port's entrance. So, its life had been joined to the sea since its creation. Today, the life of Piraeus is centered on its three ports. You can walk around the central harbour, shared by cargo and passenger ships alike, and watch the constant comings and goings of goods and people from around the world. Then, continue your walk to the other two harbors, Zea and Mikrolimano, maybe more touristy and more pleasant for the visitors. Piraeus is not only a harbor. This city is full of surprises and unexpected sights worth to explore.

Little of the Pireus history:
The name Piraeus roughly means "the place over the passage". In very early antiquity Piraeus was a rocky island (the settlement of Mounichia--the present Kastella) connected to the mainland by a low-lying stretch of land that was flooded with sea water most of the year and was used as a salt field whenever it dried up. Consequently it was called the "Halipedon" (salt field) and its muddy soil made it a tricky passage. The area was increasingly silted and flooding ceased, and by early classical times the land passage was made safe. It was then that Piraeus assumed its importance as a deep water harbor, and the older, shallow Phaleron harbor fell into gradual disuse.

The square is bordered by Vas. Georgiou A' Street to the north, Othonos Street to the south, Filellinon Street to the west and Amalias Avenue to the east. The eastern side of the square is higher than the western and is dominated by a set of marble steps that lead to Amalias Avenue. It is arguably the most "Americanized" of Athens' municipalities, as an American airbase was located nearby in the 1980's, with the base's population helping to shape Glyfada's character in terms of the types of restaurants and shopping centers there, leading to an interesting blend of Greek and American atmosphere, aesthetics, and cuisine. Glyfada was also the original location of the junior division of one of Greece's oldest English-language schools, Campion. Although the base is now gone and the school relocated, Glyfada has still retained some of its American flavor, while continuing to offer its distinctly Greek cuisine, entertainment, and nightlife.

ATTICA

Attica Greece Area of Attica (in Greek it is Attike) is a part of in Greece, containing Athens, which is the capital of Greece (Hellas). Attica is also the only prefecture in the periphery of Attica. Attica is situated in southern Greece, and covers about 3,800 square kilometers. In addition to Athens, it contains within its area the cities of Peiraeus, Eleusis, Megara, Laurium, and Marathon, as well as a small part of the Peloponnese peninsula and the islands of Salamis, Aegina, Poros, Hydra, Spetses, Kythira, and Antikythira. About 5,000,000 people live in the nomos, of which more than 95% are habitants of the Athens metropolitan area.

LOCATION OF ATTICA

Location of Attica Greece Attica is a peninsula jutting into the Aegean Sea. Mountains divide the peninsula into the plains of Pedia, Mesogeia, and Thriasia. The mountains include Hymettus, the eastern portion of Geraneia, Parnitha, Aigaleo and the Penteli mountains. To the north it is bordered by the Boeotian plain and to the west it is bordered by Corinth. The Saronic Gulf lies to the south and the island of Euboea lies off the north coast. Athens' first and only large reservoir, Lake Marathon, is about 42 km northeast and is called the Marathon Dam, which first opened in the 1920s. Since that time, it has been Attica's largest lake. Forests cover the area around Parnitha, around Hymettus and into the northeast and the north in the hills and the mountains, except for the mountaintops, but the mountains to the west and the south are grassy, barren or forested. The Cephisus River is the longest river, and Parnetha or Parnitha is the tallest mountain in Attica. The prefecture also has parklands in the Hymettus, Penteli and the Parnitha mountains and the southern part of the peninsula. According to Plato, Attica's ancient boundaries were fixed by the Isthmus, and that in the direction of the continent they extended as far as the heights of Cithaeron and Parnes. The boundary line came down in the direction of the sea, having the district of Oropus on the right, and with the river Asopus as the limit on the left.
